London!

Hello! Last weekend Anne Marie and I headed off to London! We arrived in the city thursday night and headed to our hostel. Surprisingly, we didn't get lost and easily found it after a short walk from the Victoria Train Station. Friday morning, after enjoying a free breakfast at our hostel, we headed to Westminster Abbey to meet Anne Marie's cousin. Her cousin, Danielle, moved to Bristol(a city a few hours outside of London) in July because her husband is from there. Once we found them we decided to begin our day! After walking by and taking some photos of Big Ben we headed to the London Eye. The London Eye is a huge ferris wheel that overlooks the entire city! After the London Eye we continued walking around the city. We walked over to St. Paul's Cathedral and then headed to a local Pub for lunch. Even though Anne Marie and I don't like fish we decided we had to try fish and chips since we were in London, and it was actually pretty good! After lunch we saw the Tower Bridge of London(which everyone calls London Bridge) and Buckingham Palace. It was fun to actually see the guards in the red suits! After walking all day we decided to take a ride in what was basically a cart driven by a bicycle to go to Queen's theatre to see Les Miserables! After picking up our tickets and grabbing a slice of pizza Anne Marie, Danielle, and I headed in to see the show. It was AMAZING! I was jealous that my family had gotten to see it a few weeks earlier back in Louisville, but it was definitely worth the wait to see it in London. After the show we were exhausted from walking around all day and headed back to our hostel and went straight to bed.
Saturday morning we woke up early to go on a bike tour of the city. We were very lucky and had perfect weather! Both days we were there it was 70 and sunny, which is extremely unusual for London! Our bike tour was fantastic! We rode bikes called Bromptons that are only made in London and are very different than a normal bike. The tires and frame of the bike sit very low but the handle bars and seat are still normal. The back tire of the bike also flips under and serves as a kickstand. On the tour we biked across Tower Bridge which was kind of nerve racking because we were on the road with all of the cars. This tour was great because it took us to several different parts and places in London that we would have never found on our own! At the end of the tour we got to see the place where the Mayflower took off which was cool to see! After the tour we headed off to finish up some last minute sight seeing before we headed back to Madrid the next day. Our first stop was Harrods, the huge department store! The outside looked like a Palace and the inside was just as elegant. The store was huge and filled with all kinds of designer items. After Harrods we walked around Hyde Park before heading to dinner. For dinner Saturday night we went to Chipotle! It was great to have food that we haven't had in over 3 months.

Sunday morning we woke up early to make our way back to the airport. We arrived in Madrid on Sunday afternoon. London was definitely one of my favorite cities! It was absolutely beautiful(plus it was nice that they spoke english)! Tomorrow I head off to Italy to visit Milan, Venice, Florence, Cinque Terre, and Rome! I can not wait for my Italian adventure to begin, I will definitely have a lot to blog about when I return from the 10 day trip!

Alicante!

While I have been on many fun field trips with school in the past nothing quite compares to this one. This past weekend I traveled to Alicante, Spain with my oceanography class. I knew the trip was going to be fun but I had no idea just how much fun it would be.

We left from school thursday afternoon and headed on a 6 hour bus ride to Alicante. When we arrived that evening it was already dinner time and we sat down to a three course dinner at our very nice hotel(the whole weekend we joked about how the hotel was like a cruise ship because everything was included). The next morning we got up and headed off to a local Yacht Club. Several days earlier we had been told by our teacher that we would get a surprise friday morning and we were all very excited to see what it would be! After exploring a submarine we finally got to see our surprise, a rescued turtle who we were going to get to see be released back into the ocean. After talking with our teacher's sister who works at the Yacht Club and learning a little bit about what they do there we split into 3 groups and hopped aboard kayaks, small sailboats, and a large sailboat they call a cruiser. My friend Rachel and I went on the cruiser first and were able to lay out and tan on top of the boat while we cruised around the ocean. The weather this day was absolutely gorgeous, 75 and sunny! After basking in the sun it was mine and Rachel's turn to kayak. In the middle of the ocean a man on a small motor boat came and got us so we could transfer into the kayak. While getting into the kayak was successful, the driver decided he wanted to turn us around, and he did so very quickly. Well needless to say our tiny kayak couldn't keep up with his motorboat and we capsized in the middle of the ocean, quite a site! After taking turns on the 3 different boats we headed back into the marina for lunch. Afterwards we laid out by the pool for a few hours. While this is not normally part of the trip we had a substitute teacher(our teacher is pregnant and couldn't go) who really didn't know what was going on so he told us simply to ret by the pool! After some lovely tanning which resulted in sun burn for everyone we headed off to a fish auction. I had been dreading this because I absolutely hate fish and their smell but it was actually not as bad as I had imagined! We learned how everyday all of the fisherman bring in what they have caught and take it to the fish auction where restaurant owners and other people who want fish come to purchase it. In the middle of the room is a large TV screen that begins by listing the type of fish and a price for it that is about 3 times its value. The price immediately starts to decline and whoever presses the button on the buzzer that they have first gets the fish. While we were there a fight broke out because apparently some fisherman have been hiding small fish under the larger ones so the unit seems to weigh more and they make more money and another man was calling them out on it. After a long day in the sun we headed back to the hotel for a delicious buffet dinner!
Saturday was the day we got to go snorkeling! We headed off to a snorkel shop to get our wetsuits fitted, which is not near as easy as it sounds. These wetsuits which were basically skin tight pieces of foam were not easy to get on, especially over bad sunburn! After struggling into my wetsuit which by the way did not fit(even though I was told it did) we immediately had to get back out of them and then catch a ferry over to Tabarca Island where we would snorkel. Once we arrived we visited a local aquarium and then it was time to yet again put on the dreaded wetsuit. Once we were all suited up with suit, mask, snorkel, booties, and flippers we began to snorkel! This was difficult at first because I had to get used to the wetsuit and to breathing with the snorkel that kept getting water in it, but eventually I got the hang of it! We saw large schools of fish, jellyfish, and some people even saw an octopus. It was a lot of fun, but the water was very cold. After snorkeling we ate lunch on the island and then boarded the ferry to head back to the mainland.

Sunday morning, our last day in beautiful Alicante we ate breakfast and then went on a "nature hike" of the sand dunes and beaches. Basically this was the part that justified this amazing weekend being a school trip! After that we loaded up on the buses and headed back to Madrid. While I had always been excited for this trip I had no idea just how much I would love it! Alicante is a GORGEOUS town and I would love to go back(hint hint mom and dad, family vacation soon?). The trip was way better than I had ever expected and now I have a great tan which is always a bonus!

Ireland!

So it's been awhile since I last blogged, this might be a long one!
Last weekend my friends Anne Marie, Liz, and I headed off to Dublin, Ireland. I was very excited for this trip but didn't know exactly what to expect. We arrived late thursday night and checked into the Globetrotters Hostel. This hostel was fabulous, the people were amazing and there was a huge free breakfast which is always a plus! The location was also within walking distance of everything! That night we went to a pub close to our hostel. We really didn't like the music they were playing and noticed that they had something where you could hookup your ipod so we asked if it would be ok if we played our own music. They said it was fine so we began blasting country music, something they had certainly never heard before. It was great!
Friday morning we started our day with a free walking tour of the city! The three hour long tour took us to many historical locations in Dublin and explained much of the history of the city. On the tour we went to Dublin Castle, Trinity College(absolutely beautiful), St. Stephen's Green(a gorgeous park), as well as several other buildings and monuments. The tour dropped us off at an Irish pub for lunch. I had a delicious bowl of traditional beef stew, it was great! After lunch we decided to head to the Kilmainham Jail. This jail had been used for many people involved in Irish rebellions up until 1924. The prison was in use for over 128 years and housed women, men, and children. At that time children could be punished for even very small crimes(like stealing a loaf of bread) by being put in prison. It was very interesting to see all of the cells and to learn about the prison's history.
Saturday morning, after enjoying our delicious free breakfast, we began by going to the Leprechaun Museum(sounds ridiculous, I'm aware). The Museum was actually very fun! It explained and illustrated all kinds of different Irish myths and folk tales. My favorite part was the giant room. This room was supposed to resemble the house of a giant and had extremely oversized furniture that you could climb on. After our visit to the museum we began to head back into the center of the city and ran into a Forever 21. We naturally had to go inside since we hadn't seen one in over 3 months! That afternoon we continued to walk around Dublin and went to St. Patrick's Cathedral. The Cathedral was beautiful! It was enormous stain glass windows and extremely tall, gorgeous ceilings! Saturday night we had a lovely Irish dinner in a pub across from our hostel and then headed back because we had to wake up extremely early to go on a tour of the Cliffs of Moher the next day. This day seemed even earlier because it was daylight savings so we had to set our clocks forward an hour(daylight savings is a week later in Europe than in America).
Sunday morning we boarded a bus to Galway to go on a tour of the Cliffs of Moher. The tour also included stops at many other places in the Irish country side. After stopping in Galway we continued to the Cliffs. Once we got there they were absolutely breathtaking, and we got lucky and had perfect weather(this is rare in Ireland where it is usually rainy). The huge cliffs overlooked the water and the sight was absolutely amazing and rivaled my favorite view from Portugal! We roamed around the Cliffs for almost two hours, but I could have stayed there all day! This was definitely the highlight of my trip! This view of the huge cliffs all in a row overlooking the water was absolutely amazing! Overall Ireland was definitely one of my favorite trips, I absolutely loved it!

Amsterdam!

This weekend began 6 weekends in a row of trips, and being in Amsterdam was a great way to start it off! I arrived in Amsterdam friday morning. After having some minor difficulties figuring out what train would take us to our hostel(kind of tricky when the signs are in Dutch) we were finally able to figure it out! We made it to the Flying Pig Hostel without getting lost. After checking in we headed off to the Anne Frank Museum. This museum is the actual house, they call it the "Secret Annex" where Anne Frank and her family went into hiding during the Holocaust. It is hard to imagine that 8 people were able to live in such a small space for over two years. The museum was very interesting. There were a lot of videos of people who had known Anne, including her dad, as well as many of her diary entries. The museum did a really great job of telling such an amazing story. After that we headed off to the Van Gough Museum. This museum was very impressive and filled with paintings and sketches done by Van Gough as well as a few other artists. I like to think that the paintings I have painted in my art class here are pretty good, but I can't even imagine painting the things that Van Gough came up with.
Saturday morning, after enjoying the free breakfast at our hostel we headed off on a free walking tour of Amsterdam. I figured this would be good way to learn more about Amsterdam because none of us knew a lot about the city. The tour was much more interesting than I had expected. Our guide was a little nutty, but she definitely knew what she was talking about. We walked through many different parts of Amsterdam including the Red Light District, it was bizarre to say the least. That afternoon we headed off to the Heineken Experience, which is basically an interactive tour of the Heineken Brewery that is located there. It was really cool. They took you through the entire process of how the beer is made, it actually takes about 6 weeks! Part of the Heineken Experience was going on this ride where you were supposed to be the beer so you went through all of the steps that a beer did when being brewed. It was like a roller coaster, so fun! The next morning we went on a canal cruise before heading off to the airport for our flight back to Madrid. Amsterdam was a great city and a lot of fun! Next weekend I head off to Ireland for another weekend trip!

Update on the past few weeks!

In Cadiz for Carnival!

So its been awhile since I blogged last! Here's a quick update on the past two weeks!

February 23-27- I finished midterms(yes, I actually go to school here sometimes). That weekend almost everyone at SLU madrid stayed in Madrid(this is rare) because we had all just gotten back from long and exhausting winter break trips. The weather this weekend was between 70 and 75 degrees and sunny, in February. Because of all the amazing weather we all laid out in Retiro Park and I even got a little sunburnt. We also did some shopping and my friends Anne Marie and Brittany got there haircut. They were a little nervous because of the language barrier but after googling "spanish haircutting terms" everything turned out great! The next day we went to the Gran Via area and explored a local food market that was very cool and had great Ice Cream. We also went to a tapas bar called El Tigre. El Tigre is a local favorite and was very cool to see. It was a much needed relaxing weekend that luckily had perfect weather!

February 27- March 6- After another 4 day week of school it was time for Carnaval in Cadiz. This was a trip through a company called EuropeanVibe that included everything(bus, food, hotel, etc.)and about 75 SLU kids went. The trip took us to a huge festival(Carnaval) in Cadiz, Spain. It was kind of like Mardi Gras in Saint Louis except there were over 150,000 people there. Everyone dressed up in all kinds of different costumes, basically like halloween-anything goes. We stayed in a four star apartment style hotel that was beautiful and very close to a beach. The weekend was great, however on our 8 hour bus ride home our bus started smoking and we had to wait four hours for another one to come get us from the middle of nowhere! Beside that it was a very fun weekend!

March 6-March 13- Another week of school completed! Even though it is only March this weekend was my last weekend in Madrid finals week in early May. It is crazy to think how fast the time has gone by and that I only have 2 months left in Madrid:( Friday we started our day by going to our favorite restaurant near our house, Pizza y Pasta. After that we headed off to Corte Ingles to get a new camera for my Anne Marie after hers was stolen in Cadiz(along with the rest of her stuff, major bummer). Corte Ingles is a HUGE department store that has everything you could ever imagine including a full grocery store in the basement. It is so big that there are two neighboring buildings for it. It is perhaps the most overwhelming store I have ever been into. Anyway after getting a new camera we left and headed back to our house. That night we went to Kapital which is a huge 7 story nightclub. It is very well known in Madrid so we figured we had to go at least once! Saturday we finally made it over to the Prado Museum, we live about a 15 minute walk from there but hadn't gone yet. It was very cool to se all of the different artwork. Today was probably the most exciting day of the weekend, we went to a bullfight! Before going I really had no idea what to expect. I was aware that they killed the bull at the end but that is basically all I knew. It turns out that there are 6 rounds(so 6 bulls are killed, which was sad). At the beginning horses lead out all of the matadors who then stand behind small walls that protect them from the bull. After the bull is released the matadors take turns coming out from behind the walls and flashing around a pink cape. A few minuted later a man comes out with a huge sword on a horse and precedes to stab the bull just enough to wound him. After that the matadors run around with ribbon covered spears that they throw into the bulls back, but again this is just enough to hurt him but he is still very aggressive at this point. Some rounds that matadors would almost do tricks with the bulls where the bull would get SO close to them. One round a matador even got caught in the bulls horns and was thrown on the ground but he quickly recovered! After that they bring out a sword and the bull is stabbed. Even though it was sad to watch it was definitely worth seeing and was a very interesting experience. Madrid's stadium is the 3rd largest in the world and a ton of people come out to watch the weekly fights!

It is so strange to think that I have already been here for over 2 months and only have about 2 months left. Starting this weekend I am going on trips to Amsterdam, Ireland, Allcante(for my oceanography class), London, and then Spring Break in Italy for 10 days! It will be a busy an exciting 2 months, can't wait!!!

Winter Break- Morocco!

After several trips to various European cities it was finally time for our trip to Morocco, Africa! Morocco is actually closer to Spain than a lot of European cities because the top of Morocco almost touches the southern point of Spain. Because we wanted to spend more time in Morocco we planned to go for winter break where we had monday and tuesday off school, and since I never have classes on Fridays we had plenty of time for a long trip. We left friday afternoon for Morocco and began a 3 night 4 day tour on Saturday morning.
Funny Story- Our flight was Friday afternoon so the entire group of 15 had planned on meeting at the airport a few hours before our flight. As the flight was about to board we are still missing 3 people. 2 of them come running up(literally running) so we were thinking that everything was good and we would all making our 3:30 flight to Marrakech, Morocco. However, it turned out that one of the boys Joe, hadn't printed off his boarding pass. Normally this wouldn't be a big deal in the US but on this airline it was. He had to wait in line to get the boarding pass and pay 40 euros just for them to print it off. We were all hoping he would somehow be able to sprint through the airport and still make the flight but he ended up missing it because they wouldn't let him go to the gate since the flight was already boarding. This was a huge bummer because there is only one flight to Morocco per day so he wasn't going to be able to make the tour. The whole trip we were wondering what Joe was doing, assuming he was still in Madrid. The last night Joe just shows up in the middle of a desert while we were eating dinner. It turns out he had gotten on a flight Saturday and had gone with a group of strangers until he was able to meet up with us two days later. It was crazy! We couldn't believe that he was there!
Ok so back to the trip! We arrived in Marrakech around 5 in the afternoon on Friday and were on our own until Saturday morning when the tour began. Once we arrived we took a bus to the center of town and attempted to find our hostel with a map we had been given that literally had 2 streets on it. Needless to say it was an epic fail. Luckily our friend Kevin had gone on a different flight the day before so he was already there. As we were aimlessly wondering around the very crowded streets of Marrakech we ran into Kevin who just looked at us and goes "Hey guys, the hostels this way" just like it was no big deal. Once we checked into our hostel we decided to go find somewhere for dinner. All of the restaurants there are outside and are in huge tents that have tables in them. We chose a tent and had a traditional Moroccan dinner of cous-cous. The food was very cheap which is a nice change from the rest of Europe. You could get a plate of chicken cous-cous, soda, and tons of bread for about 3 euros, it was great! Afterwards we walked around all of the vendors. The streets are lined with tons of stands that sell various goods. Some people got sunglasses(they had a ton of good knock-offs) and the boys bought weird scarves and hats that made them look like Crocodile Dundee (typical). After walking around we got AMAZING 90 cent ice-cream and then headed back to our hostel.
The next morning our tour began at 7:20 am. We had a bit of a rocky start because of confusion on where we were supposed to meet, but eventually we found our bus. Since we had 15 people in our group we had a bus to ourselves. No one really knew what the plan was but we all hopped in and were excited to begin our Moroccan adventure. We drove through big mountains and stopped at multiple paces to take pictures. Around lunch time we stopped at a village where a lot of movies including Gladiator have been filmed. One of the locals took us on a tour of the entire area before we sat down to lunch. Afterwards we continued our drive towards the desert and continued to stop for photo ops. That night we slept at a hotel that was literally in the middle of a huge gorge! It was actually really cool. There was also a terrace where you could sit and watch the stars which were SO pretty there. We had another traditional dinner of soup, cous-cous, chicken, vegetables, and bread! The food was pretty much the same everywhere we went but it was pretty good.
The next morning everyone was so excited because it was the day we were going to ride our first camels! We drove the rest of the way into the desert that day, stopping at various places along the way. One really cool place we stopped was a village where the make beautiful hand made decorative carpets. The designs are so complex that they take up to a year to make. We toured around the village and then went to where the carpets were made. The local man in charge invited us in for green tea and then showed us all of the carpets. Everyone was so impressed that many of us ended up buying one. My roommate for next year, Maggie, and I bought one for the wall of our apartment next year, its going to look great! Each one had different designs which all had different meanings that were explained to us. After doing that we continued on our drive towards the desert. We stopped in the middle of this big canyon type thing where there was a small stream, the rocks were so big that it was a really cool site! That afternoon we finally made it to the Sahara desert! After having another glass of green tea( very popular in Morocco) we boarded our camels for an hour and a half ride to our campsite. The camels were bigger than I had pictured and getting on and off of the was scary. However, I really enjoyed riding them. It was also perfect because they timed it so that we rode them during sunset which was absolutely beautiful. The Sahara was so pretty, the dunes were huge and all you could see was sand! As it was getting dark we made it to our campsite for the night. The camp sat at the bottom of a huge dune which everyone attempted to climb to sea the end of the sunset. My friend Jackie and I didn't quite make it to the top(climbing huge mountains isn't really my thing). Everyone who did said it was literally the hardest thing they have ever done, worse than two-a-days for high school sports, some were crying, needless to say I'm glad I decided to turn around!
The next morning we woke up at 5:30 so we could ride our camels back to civilization during the sun rise. Even though it was chilly in the morning(and SO early) the view of the desert during sun rise was completely worth it! Once we were out of the desert we stopped, had breakfast and changed clothes and then headed off to another desert to ride more camels before heading back to Madrid the next evening. That afternoon we rode camels to our campsite again, this time for a shorter amount of time which is good because everyone was pretty sore from the first two camel rides! The campsite for this night was so nice! There were huge tents with mattresses, bathrooms, showers, etc. The first one had not been quite as nice (there were no bathrooms) so this was a nice change. We played around on the sand dunes that afternoon and watched another beautiful sunset! We had another traditional Moroccan meal that night that was made so much better when our friend Joe(who I mentioned at the beginning) randomly showed up! The next morning we had to get up early again so we could drive back to Marrakech to catch our afternoon flight.
After we reached the airport we thought that everyone was good to go, we were all making the flight this time, and that everyone had a boarding pass. It turns out that two of the boys couldn't print there boarding passes off before so they figured they would just get them at the airport. Well, they had actually booked their flight for March 22 not February 22 which is why they couldn't print off their boarding passes(you can only print them up to 15 days before you flight). Unfortunately they had to pay 240 euros to be able to come home with us. You could say there were a lot of flight issues on this trip(only for the boys...). We all made it home safely with all 15 of us. Accomplishment!
Morocco was a great trip and an amazing once in a life time experience! It is definitely something I will never forget! The group of people I went with, 6 girls and 9 boys, was great and everything worked out perfectly!

Portugal=best place ever!!!!

This past weekend I went to Lisbon, Portugal. It was so amazing I don't even know where to begin. We arrived in Portugal at 8:00 friday morning after "sleeping" in the Madrid airport the night before. The metro's(subway system) closes from 1-6am and taxis are ridiculously expensive so for early flights sleeping in the airport is the best option. When we got to Portugal it was warm and gorgeous! This was going to be the first time we had stayed at a hostel so I was a little nervous but it turned out to be awesome. The Yes! Lisbon Hostel(yeah, that is actually what it is called) was nicer than a lot of hotels and only 15 euros a night. They provided linens, towels, internet, free breakfast, and the atmosphere was great! Everyone there was SO friendly, and they put us in the best room in the hostel(according to them). It was a huge room with really comfortable beds a balcony and room to hang out.
After settling in there we headed off to the second biggest aquarium in the world! It was Amazing to see. In the middle of the aquarium was a HUGE glass tank filled with all kind of animals that was so big you could see it from every part of the aquarium. My favorite were the otters, there were three of them and they were all sleeping...too cute! After the aquarium we discovered a small marina area that was offering free motorboat, sailboat, and kayak rides so we headed over there! The weather was perfect and it was really fun to go out in the boats. After that we got some lunch and gelato and quickly realized how cheap everything in Portugal was, it was a great change from Paris last week where everything is so expensive. The rest of the day was fairly uneventful but fun. We walked around the area of our hostel and saw some really beautiful buildings. We got some dinner and afterwards decided to get more gelato(the gelato in Portugal is amazing). We had a tour planned for the next day that promised to take us to "the best gelato in Portugal" as we were eating our gelato that night we decided it HAD to be the same place because it was so good, turns out it was! Afterwards we headed to bed so we could get up early for our free breakfast and tour!
The "We Hate Tourism Tours" had been suggested to us by a girl in our sorority who was in Portugal last fall, and I am so glad we took her advice. It was one of the best days of my life. Everything was absolutely gorgeous! We began by going to Sentra, a large area with castles and an amazing park that had gardens, caves, towers, etc. It was absolutely beautiful and I was sure that this would be the best part of the trip, but I was wrong. Before heading to what would soon be my new favorite place we stopped at a small road side stand to get some lunch, that was included in the tour. We watched our delicious lunch of chorizo inside bread be made, starting with the dough and then cooked inside a large oven. While we were waiting our awesome guide Ricardo brought us some wine and the most delicious cheese I've ever had. Afterwards we took our lunches and headed off to the farthest western point of Europe. Because it is so far west people used to believe that this point was the end of the world. It was the most beautiful place I have ever seen. All nine of us(who are usually super loud and talkative) sat in near silence on the stone wall overlooking the water as we ate our lunches. It was so gorgeous that it was breathtaking and is impossible to describe. After taking in the scenery we went to a beach where we got to play around in the sand. Even though it is February it was 60-65 degrees and sunny, we could not have planned for better weather! We enjoyed several more beautiful views throughout the day. It was by far the best tour I have ever been on and one of the best days of my life. None of us could stop talking about how much we loved everything. That night we decided to eat dinner at the hostel, for 8 euro you got bread, soup, huge helpings of chicken, rice, and salad, homemade chocolate cake and passion fruit mousse as well as three drinks, quite the bargain and the food was delicious!
Everything in Portugal was absolutely amazing and I would go back tomorrow if I could(but it turns out I'm actually here to go to school). Family vacation soon Mom and Dad? I cannot imagine a more beautiful place with friendlier people than what I found in Portugal, the entire experience was absolutely amazing! My next trip is camel riding through Morocco, which I cannot wait for!
